Preparing People for an AI-Shaped Future: A Conversation with Thiru Venkatachalam

Building human capacity for a changing world.
Recently, Pico Ripple Foundation had the opportunity to learn from and exchange ideas with Thiru Venkatachalam, VP & Senior Partner and AI Transformation Leader at IBM Consulting, during his visit to Washington, D.C.
Thiru’s presentation, Preparing Education Industry for an AI-Native World, explored a question that sits at the heart of Pico Ripple’s work: How do we prepare people—not simply technology—for a world being reshaped by AI?
From learning tasks to developing judgment
One of the most thought-provoking ideas from the conversation was that as AI becomes capable of performing more tasks, the value of human contribution begins to shift.
Thiru described this transition as moving from following instructions to exercising judgment, from writing code to directing and reviewing AI, from knowing the answer to asking the right question, and from memorizing information to verifying and synthesizing it. He also emphasized continuous learning and the ability to coordinate effectively with both people and AI systems. Northeastern University - AI in…
For Pico Ripple, this raises an important educational question:
If technology can increasingly help us do the work, what human capacities do we need to cultivate so that people can understand, question, guide, and make meaningful decisions with it?
That question extends far beyond learning how to use the latest AI tool. It points toward critical thinking, judgment, curiosity, adaptability, communication, creativity, and the ability to continue learning throughout life.
Education for more than the present moment
Thiru framed student preparation across three horizons: learning to use AI and understand its foundations now, learning to apply, manage, and audit AI, and eventually being prepared to build solutions for an increasingly agentic world. Northeastern University - AI in…
The larger message was not simply that students need more technology. It was that education must prepare young people for a world fundamentally different from the one previous generations entered. As his presentation put it, our responsibility is to prepare students for “a world full of AI.” Northeastern University - AI in…
At Pico Ripple, we believe that preparation should begin with people.
Technology will continue to change. Particular tools, platforms, and even professions will change with it. The deeper challenge is helping people develop capacities that allow them to learn, adapt, question, create, collaborate, and remain active participants in shaping their own futures.
The human foundations remain
Perhaps fittingly, after a presentation about rapid technological transformation, Thiru concluded with three remarkably human lessons from his own career:
Perseverance. Respect for others. Hard work. Northeastern University - AI in…
Those ideas resonate strongly with Pico Ripple Foundation.
Preparing for the future is not only about anticipating what technology will be able to do. It is also about asking what people should continue to learn, preserve, strengthen, and pass forward.
That is the space Pico Ripple hopes to explore—with educators, researchers, industry leaders, families, and communities.
Small beginnings can create wider impact and lasting futures.
